Fifty-Two

Catching up on the 52 paintings with another small one. I’m actually looking to explore the colors and style of the last 52, but I had to revisit a color scheme that didn’t quite work the first time with this one.

A New 52

This week’s 52 is a study in color subtlety.

The 52 in Question

Posted in 52, Paintings on May 12th, 2010 by Ryan

Here is the latest 52 painting. I have a time lapse for this one coming too. This was supposed to be a sister piece to the last 52 painting, with a transitional background, but I ended up going a different direction.  I’m still deciding what I think of this one, but it has given me a few ideas I’d like to work on.

A 52 Color Test

Posted in 52, Paintings on April 20th, 2010 by Ryan

I’m doing a bit of a color test with this week’s 52. I’ve worked with overlaying the colors on different tones in the past, but it has been awhile, and thought the concentric paintings might make good use of it.  This smaller piece has a lighter background in the center, and I’m not sure I like it with a lower contrast there, though I had a hunch I wouldn’t.  S0metimes you just have to try things even if you don’t think they’ll work because occasionally, you’re surprised by the results.

Hypnotized by a 52

I’m really happy with the color balance I got in this piece.  I’m still working with more subtle shifts, but I’m also laying in movement and underlying complexity where I can.

52 and the Cat Who Didn’t Help

Posted in 52, Paintings on April 14th, 2010 by Ryan

Yes, the gallery cat tried to help me paint this one… or more realistically, she tried to paint my window sill.

As I was painting, she was sitting in the window, spazzing out about a bug flying around.  At one point she was on the floor, still in total hunter kitty mode, when she shot up into the window, OVER the palette.  When I looked over, I saw a big red paw smudge, so I SWOOPED her up, and it was off to the sink to get drenched.  She did not like that, but I was finally able to get most of the paint off her and the window.

I’m somewhat happy with the piece, though I may revisit this one and make some tweaks to activate the space a little more.

A Quarter of 52

Here’s a quick, smaller painting for the 52 this week. I decided to take a break from the larger concentric pieces and work out a few color ideas. As I type this, I notice that I’m exploring similar compositional elements from the “Spring” panel in a 4 seasons piece I did awhile back. How fitting. Also, the gallery cat is attacking my arm.

The 52 Dozen

With this one, I’m keeping the somewhat more minimal details and subtle color shifts of the last concentric fracture painting, but angling toward much more muted hues.

March of the 52

Here is the latest 52 and Concentric Fracture.  I’m working on simplifying the forms in this line and playing with more subtle shifts, as well as upping the intensity of the colors.  I think these work better in their simpler form the larger they get.  Interesting.

Blue 52

I’m late on getting this one up, but here is the 52 painting for last week.  I’ll have this week’s painting up as soon as I… paint it.
